maxi dress maxi skirt rectangle body type tips
Need maxi dress or maxi skirt style tips to disguise your rectangle body type and max out your slim curves? Yes, you can look curvy in a style that's made to slim all the other body types.
Tip #1: Max out your bust with a square neckline maxi dress. This is a trick I learned from a corset site that recommends a straight across cut for women with a smaller bust. Click pic 3 of Tudor's star Natalie Dormer above and notice the corset dress cuts straight across creating the illusion of a chest that is busting out of the top. Dormer is actually quite small up top but always looks super voluptuous on the show.
I accidentally found a maxi dress in Kaui last summer that does the same for me and I wear it with a pushup bra when I feel like exaggerating the chest enhancing effect. If you want to add more volume up top add a shrug or crop cardigan like my black one from The Limited to cover your arms which brings more attention to the faux cleavage and balances the long maxi dress. I usually wear this dress with ZigiSoho ankle strap peep toe wedges or with Nine West black & white strappy high heel sandals (both featured in previous clothing posts).
Tip #2: Belt an elastic waist blouse over your maxi skirt to create a peplum effect. Not only does this highlight your slim waist it adds some volume to the hips which allows you to wear a more fitted maxi skirt like the royal blue one I found at a thrift store last fall. The safari top is from H&M and has a gathered elastic waistband that I belted with a camo belt my son never wore when he was 10. I usually wear this look with Sanuk leather sandals or Steve Madden gladiator sandals.
Tip #3: Show off your legs or make a statement! If you're a ruler body type chances are you're not wearing a maxi dress or skirt to hide a fat butt or fat thighs or a fat stomach either. You most likely have flat abs and killer toned legs so why not take advantage of your gifts with a flowing maxi skirt with not 1 but 2 slits like this one from F21. This instantly boosts the sexy factor and combined with pointy heels like these Liz Claiborne nude snakeskin slingback pumps makes you look like you have legs for days which distracts from a smaller chest and less curvy body.
If you really want to make a statement then place even more emphasis on those lean legs with some thigh high boots! Most women have huge calves and can't pull off this look but as a ruler you'll not only pull it off you'll have other women green with envy (prepare for the skinny bitch comments from your bffs, or maybe you're used to it by now ha ha). The silk floral blouse with ruching that enhances the chest is from Express and works best when tucked in and the waistband of your skirt is pulled up right below the rib cage.
