When you train right for your female body type it may take you a while to get used to the reality that you are getting exactly the body you want from your fitness plan because you are so used to not getting the results you want from most fitness plans.
For many many years I struggled (like most women) to get lean and toned without losing my booty or my boobs, to lose inches around my waist and flatten my abs without getting boxy torso, and to sculpt a fuller booty without bulking up my thighs.
Like many women, I'm your typical rectangle body type and most workout plans (which are not customizable) have gotten me the complete opposite results I wanted: bulky thighs, boxy torso, flat butt and worst of all smaller chest.
Since I started customizing workout to my body type I'm getting exactly the body I want BUT none of my clothes fit me anymore so had to go out and buy a few new things. Small price to pay for a body makeover you actually want, right! So here's some quick tips to help you get exactly the body YOU want for yourself.
1. Embrace your body type. Stop trying to change your body type (can't be done) and instead focus on workouts that balance your shape. Think in terms of how to minimize what stands out and how to build up what doesn't. Like eye makeup, if you add less/more in certain areas other areas disappear/stand out. Find the workouts and exercises that are going to add lean muscle and shape where you need it and reduce it where you don't. When you focus on doing both vs. just losing what you don't like, you get much better results.
2. Exploit your body type pros. Every body type has pros and cons and you should use these to your advantage. One of my favorite things about being a rectangle body type is I can eat more carbs and get away with less fatloss workouts than other body types which means more time to train the booty and carve out a nice waist (this applies somewhat to inverted pyramids too). Hourglass and triangle body types already have a nice waist and a full booty that is often just covered in a layer of fat. That means more time for total body and upper body workouts that burn the fat without bulking up your butt and thighs. Remember that exercise is a lot like clothes some clothes make you look bigger than you are while others highlight your assets and minimize your flaws.
3. Evolve from your negative body image. Everybody, no matter how attractive or fit, or famous, has body hangups and some of those women that you think have perfect bodies have even worst body image and bad self esteem than the rest of us average women. Look beyond your flaws and focus on what is great about your body most of the time. If necessary do a media detox for a while to reduce the pressure to look a certain way or do what I do and come up with a collection of best body pics that feels positive and inspiring to you. The less you focus on your flaws the more you will appreciate what you have and make the most of it with smarter workouts and a smarter eating plan that is right for your unique body and your lifestyle.
Bonus tip: Once you do start getting the body you want you may have to look for different styles, fits, cuts of clothing that you are not used to buying. This can be really fun if you let go of your old body image : )
